Chapter 16
Unwelcome
“IF MY COUSINS WERE HOME, they could’ve been killed,” I say, wringing my hands together. I’ve never been so thankful for something in my life. The explosives some of the exempt assholes set off were right below their rooms. “What the hell is going on? What do we even do? Why hasn’t Mitchell called? I want to take my cousins and leave.”
Kingston hugs me against him without a word. He’s in as much shock as I am and hasn’t let me go since we got out of the house before it blew up. Now, we all hide in Liz’s lab, and I’m freaking the eff out worse than ever. It was one thing to take advantage of a weird opportunity, but to come after me directly? What did I do to deserve this?
“There is still an hour of sunlight left. Mitchell could be busy. We left him in an uncertain state against the Monroe Region,” Diego says, rubbing circles on my back.
I groan, resting my chin on Kingston’s shoulder. “I still think we need to do something.”
“The only thing I want you to do now is to take a breath,” Austin says, touching his fingers to my cheeks from over Kingston’s shoulders. “Come on. Inhale and exhale. Your heart is out of control, and Kingston’s not going to let go until he’s certain you’re not going to flip out and do something crazy like run out into the sun.”
I do as he says, closing my eyes to try my best to settle my shot nerves.
“That’s it, Jewel,” Austin says, resting his forehead to mine. “Do it again.”
Kingston’s grip loosens, but he still doesn’t let go of me. I think Austin might be slightly wrong about Kingston holding me to assure I don’t do anything rash. I don’t point it out, though, and I’ll give Kingston another minute more.
I shift in his arms and lean back to meet his glum face. “I think I’m okay, Kingston.”
“I’m not,” he says. “I should’ve reacted faster. I heard them outside. I just didn’t expect—”
“You couldn’t have known the exempt would attack the house, bro,” Diego says, squeezing Kingston’s shoulder. “Don’t hold onto that shit. I’d have thought the same as you.”
Austin joins our hug. “You got Jewel out, and you’re both safe and unharmed. That’s what matters.”
A soft, weird ass cooing noise escapes my mouth. I can’t help it. I love this so much that it makes all the other stuff seem not so bad. I’ve always admired my guys’ brotherly loyalty and their ability to be there for one another. It makes me so incredibly happy that despite the disaster, they don’t try to blame anyone but the exempt and that they also won’t allow Kingston to carry unnecessary guilt.
“See?” Austin says, smiling at me. “Jewel thinks so.”
“Is that what that cute ass noise meant?” Kingston asks, raising an eyebrow at me.
I bob my head, smiling. “I just love that you love each other so much.”
“I wouldn’t go that far,” Kingston teases.
“Yeah,
